The Federal Communications Commission says AT&T will pay $500,000 to settle charges that it erroneously billed customers and non-customers a $3.95 monthly recurring fee.
AT&T says it is "taking steps" to address the billing problems. As part of the settlement, AT&T will implement a new testing system, verify records and assign additional analysts to its bill verification unit, the FCC said.
"AT&T agrees to abide by the terms of the FCC's consent decree, many of which the company had already undertaken of its own volition upon discovering the billing error," the company said in a statement Wednesday.
"In particular, all refunds and credits have already been issued to misbilled consumers. So that this investigation can be ended amicably and expeditiously, AT&T has agreed to a payment of $500,000 to the FCC," AT&T said.
