Gasoline prices are moving back toward $4 a gallon, dropping for 7 consecutive days from the record of $4.11 set earlier in the month on July 17.
Even with the drop in price, regular gasoline has increased more than 36 percent since last summer and now sells above $4 a gallon in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
The average for regular unleaded gas is now $4.026 a gallon, down more than 1.5 cents in just one day. Last month regular gasoline sold for $4.06 and one year ago a gallon cost $2.94.
Mid-grade gasoline sells for an average price of $4.25 throughout the country. Premium sells for $4.41 a gallon
Diesel as fallen back from the record price of $4.84 et July 17 and now costs $4.78 a gallon. Nevertheless, the price of diesel fuel is more than 60 percent higher than one year ago.
The most expensive average gasoline prices are found in Alaska at $4.69 a gallon, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report. Consumers in Oklahoma pay $3.79 for regular self-serve.

California: Average gasoline prices have fallen off the record of $4.61 set June 19. Regular self-serve now sells for an average of $4.396 in California. Regular gasoline sells for $4.50 a gallon in San Francisco, $4.41 a gallon in Los Angeles, $4.36 a gallon is San Diego and $4.506 in Santa Barbara.
Texas: The price of regular gasoline continued down in Texas and now sells for an average price of $3.91 a gallon. Regular sells for $3.86 in Corpus Christi, $3.91 in Dallas and $3.89 in Houston.
Florida: The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the Sunshine state is now $4.017. Regular sells for $4.09 in Miami, $4.05 in Daytona Beach and $3.95 in Orlando.
