The July 4 holiday will see $4 gasoline throughout most of the country.
Consumers will spend more money per gallon on gasoline celebrating the national holiday weekend than they have ever spent in the history of the nation.
Retail gas prices set a record price for the third consecutive day, rising to a national average of $4.092 for a gallon of regular gasoline, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report.
The new record is a half-cent higher than the price just the day before.
Mid-grade gasoline now sells for $ $4.345 and premium goes for $ 4.502 a gallon. Diesel sells for $4.767, 3 cents short of the record price set June 16.
One month ago regular gasoline sold for $3.975 a gallon and one year ago a gallon cost $2.953.
That means retail gasoline prices are 3 percent higher than they were at the beginning of June and almost 40 percent higher than they were one year ago.
Gasoline now sells above $4 in 36 states and the District of Columbia. Alaska has the highest average gas prices where drivers pay $4.649 for a gallon for regular gas. California is second on the list at $4.578.
The lowest gas prices are found in Oklahoma. The state has an average price of $3.878 a gallon.

California: Regular gasoline sells for an average price of $4.578 throughout the state. The record price was set June 19 at $4.610.
One year ago regular sold for an average price of $3.154 in California.
Regular gasoline now sells for an average price of $4.600 in Los Angeles, $4.581 in San Diego, $4.607 in San Francisco and $4.673 in Santa Barbara.
Texas: Regular gasoline sells for an average price of $3.950 in the Lone Star State and that is a record price for Texans.
One year ago regular sold for an average price of $2.852 in Texas.
Regular now sells for an average price of $3.915 in Galveston, $3.922 in Houston, $3.947 in Dallas and $43.980 in Beaumont.
Florida: The average retail price for regular gasoline in the Sunshine state is now $4.055 and that is a record high.
One year ago regular gasoline sold for $2.911 in Florida.
Regular now sells for $4.069 in Daytona Beach, $4.149 in Miami and $3.971 in Orlando.
