Ring-Back Tones: Your Next Ad Channel

August 31, 2005
Think there's no possible way to sneak more ads into your life? Wrong. Ads are most likely coming to a "ring back" tone near you. The "ring back" is the sound you hear after you dial a number and wait for it to be answered.

A few wireless carriers have already replaced the traditional "ringing" sound with music or distinctive bleeps. But ads are on the way.

If a company called Perceptive Impression has its way, the music will be replaced with targeted advertisements the company creates. Perceptive Impression sees ring back ads as the latest and greatest advertising platform.

The Los Angeles company has acquired 75% of PromoTel, which holds PromoTel holds two pending patents on wireless ring back technology.
