Much Ado About Anime

DIDN'T GET WHAT?
Dana is plenty steamed because he placed an online order for an anime DVD that has never arrived. Frankly, we had no idea what retail product or service Dana was referring to, and we were a little afraid to find out. Turns our anime is some kind of Asian animation. It's similar to hentai, if that helps.

Whatever the merchandise might be, the Federal Trade Commission's Mail Order Rule requires that if it can't be promptly delivered, the consumer must be given the option of canceling the order and getting a full refund. A lot of small online merchants don't seem to know about this. They'd better find out.

We thought we made it pretty clear in the above that we didn't really care what this stuff might be. The point is that, whatever it is, Dana didn't get it. However, we seem to have stepped on some very tender toes, judging from the contents of the inbox.

Meredith wrote:
Not really -- the term covers more than just animation. Anime is the term for Japanese comic books; it's used over here because Japanese comic books aren't much like American comic books. They are mainstream literature over there, written for, and read by, adults. Of course, there are also anime titles written for children, and those have tended to be more successful over here since our culture has the preconceived notion that comic books are for children. There are also anime films, so your statement wasn't wrong -- especially since that's clearly what Dana was buying -- but the comic books came first.

Brad of Atlanta then fulminated:
I believe an apology as well as a retraction is in due regarding your comments on Dana's DVD problem. If you checked your link you would see that she ordered "The Fast and the Furious" DVD from an online store that specializes in selling animie (animation). The title she ordered is a live-action motion picture still in release at theaters (re-released in Sept). It is not anime and it is DEFINITELY NOT HENTAI.

An example of popular anime is the 'Pokemon' series. Hentai is extreme adult hard-core animation. By saying it is similar to hentai is like comparing 'Barney's Mother Goose Adventure' to 'Debbie Does Dallas'. They are not similar. By stating that she ordered an anime DVD (which she didn't) and then telling everyone that this is similar to hentai (animated porn) you just publically slandered her. Dana's problem is that she is simply an shopper that didn't do her homework (her DVD is backordered because it is not due for release until 01/02/2002).

By being a respected organization that consumers turn to for advice you have the responsibility to research your statements before making the public. Thank you.

Before making the public what?

Josh huffed:
I get the email you send out every once in awhile, and usually find its contents entertaining. However today reading your entry about Anime I was quite insulted. Being a fan of Anime for a number of years, I was very upset with your comparison of anime and hentai. Maybe you ment it to be a joke, but it wasn't a very good one.

Anime is extremely well-drawn animation, originating from asian countries. It is very popular among the college age crowd, as most colleges have anime clubs that show different anime titles at the college theater once a week. Many anime titles are turned into full american movies. Princess Mononoke, a Disney film that came out a few years ago, was just an anime with english voice overs.

Dragonball Z, a popular childrens cartoon ... also anime. They show blocks of anime on the cartoon network and the sci-fi channel. Anime is a very respectable form of video entertainment.

Hentai is porn. It is nothing but VERY graphic and often disgusting animated porn. Yes, it is popular in some circles, but it in no way reflects anime aside from the fact that the animation style is similar.

Please do not confuse the two in the future, or do a little bit more research before making such a comparison. A yahoo search for 'what is anime' and a couple of clicks will give you all the information you need to know.

As we thought we said fairly clearly, we couldn't care less what either anime or hentai might be. It's not necessary to know everything about everything, now is it?
