Here are some common problems with furniture:
- Faulty merchandise. It's broken, doesn't work right or doesn't appear to be the same quality as the model you saw in the store.
- It doesn't show up on time. Truckers show up when it suits them, not you. Regardless of what the salesman tells you, don't count on knowing exactly when the delivery truck will show up.
- It never shows up. You'd be surprised how often consumers pay good money for furniture they never receive. You get all kinds of excuses, usually the old "back-ordered" gambit. Often the truth is the store is so close to the edge it doesn't have the money to buy the furniture it already sold you.
- Warranty problems. Store warranties are just about worthless, so don't count on them.
- Credit and finance problems. Furniture dealers are notorious for violating the Truth In Lending Act. Best way to avoid these? Don't get your financing from the furniture store. Pay cash.
Our advice? Buy your furniture at weekend discount stores, outlets and other cash-and-carry venues. Borrow a neighbor's van or pick-up and bring it home yourself. You'll save money, you'll get the exact piece that caught your eye and you'll be in control of when it arrives and whether or not it's broken.
